Being able to capture new, exciting dance photographs is very hard. There are a lot of photographers out there who try to do it and are a little off the mark. A lot of dance photographs, especially for young dancers, are predominantly of girls in little tutus, maybe in the classic poses such as an arabesque, passe or the dancer doing up there pointe shoes. Photographers who have never danced, and shoot dance, tend to do this. They are unaware how far these remarkable human beings can be stretched and to what end their classical line can make. So when I had the opportunity to photograph a group of young male dancers aged between 14-17 from the Northern Ballet Academy, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to try out some new things and really show these young lads off to their very best ability. I used completely natural light throughout the photo shoot, as the studios at the Northern Ballet headquarters are really flooded with light, and really tried to guide these young men with my 10 years experience as a professional dancer. I was really able to help them pose better, looking at details such as line, head direction and their overall aesthetic look as a male dancer.
