Being a dance photographer I photograph many types of performances and Outreach performances are very different to most performances I cover. Outreach performances are designed to bring dance to the local community and on March 1st this year the LRBS asked me to come in to photograph their first Outreach performance of 2013 at Stockwell Primary School. The aim of an outreach performance is to make the local community aware of a dance school in their area and the benefits of joining that school, with the hope of inspiring the next Baryshnikov or Cojocaru to put on a pair of ballet shoes and join in. The London Russian Ballet Schools received many “Oooo’s” and “Ahhhhhh’s” as the children’s excitement on arrival into the dance space turned into a silent amazement when the dancers took to the stage. The audience stayed silent throughout the performance and a huge cheer was made when the London Russian Ballet School took their final call. A successful performance without a doubt but has it inspired the next Darcey Bussell – that we’ll have to wait and see!!
