As a dance photographer based in Hampshire I get to travel across the UK to shoot many things which are dance related from professional productions to junior dance school shows. This time it was my chance to capture some of the up and coming young Darcey Bussell’s and Carlos Acosta’s from the Northern Ballet Academy based up in Quarry Hill, Leeds.
The Northern Ballet Academy and myself had the idea of doing a formal class photo shoot, offering parents the chance to have pictures of their children doing what they love most – dance!!! Every Primary school across the UK offers a very similar thing and I have never understood why dance schools across the UK don’t offer their parents the same.
I started with a group shot of the whole class and then shot each child individually in a ballet pose of their choice. Being an ex-professional dancer myself I was able to help coach the students to get more out of their pose. I then took a headshot of each child, bringing out their little personalities, and ended with them in groups of 4 – 6 and asked them to just jump and act crazy. They absolutely loved this part and you could see their little characters really bursting out.
Here are a few of my favourite images from the day and if you are interested in having the same at your dance school, please don’t hesitate to contact me through my contact page on my website.
